Provided by a team of specialized professionals from Al Hussein Society for the Rehabilitation and Habilitation of the Physically Challenged, a three-day training course started today. Entitled “Assistive Technology for the Computer”, this course aims to train specialized members from several centers that work with people with special needs to train the physically challenged to function independently by using computers for work, education, or communication.

The Course is within the framework of a joint project between United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and AVSI an Italian NGO supported by the Government of Italy “Towards Better Integration of Persons with Disabilities through ICT and Networking”.

Funded by the Italian Government and implemented in cooperation with the Al Hussein Society for the Habilitation/Rehabilitation of the Physically Challenged, this project is considered as phase 2 and builds on the achievements of the phase one project “Improving the life conditions of people with physical disabilities through the use of ICT tools and applications”.

The first phase of the project established a specially equipped IT center at the Al Hussein Society for the Habilitation/Rehabilitation of the Physically Challenged, in addition to pioneering special IT rooms in seven other organizations. Further more, the project continues to raise awareness on the rights and opportunities of people with physical disabilities through publishing ERADA, the first national quarterly publication on disabilities with a distribution of over 10,000 copies.

The ongoing project contributes to the integration of persons with disabilities within society through training and skill building. Several workshops already took place with the aim at raising awareness on the rights of the people with disabilities and improve coordination and networking among governmental and non-governmental organizations who are working on disability issues.
