Return
November 11, 2009 – As part of the preparations for the Copenhagen Summit in December 2009 that is supposed to design a new global agreement on how to deal with climate change after 2012, the Ministry of Environment –in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – held a two-day workshop on “National Inter-Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Change” at the Marriott Hotel Amman. This workshop is considered one of the outputs of close cooperation between the UNDP and the Ministry of Environment. The Ministry executes a number of environmental programs with technical and financial support from the UNDP, including the project for the recently completed Second National Communication report, which was launched during a special session in the workshop. The report, prepared by Jordan, lays the foundation to the analysis of the way forward on climate change for the country after the Copenhagen Summit.

Attending the opening session on November 11 were high-level government officials – mainly from the Ministry of Environment, resident representatives of the United Nations in Jordan – headed by the UN Resident Coordinator, H.E. Mr. Luc Stevens, ambassadors to Jordan, and members of media.
The workshop brought together key decision-makers from line ministries and other relevant bodies to assess the implications of climate change on key sectors in Jordan. It aimed at providing participants with an overview of current international climate negotiations and the linkages with national policies.
After a general discussion on the key thematic issues being negotiated under the Bali Action Plan, the workshop focused on the transportation, energy, water and agriculture sectors. It also covered economic issues that have been identified as national priorities, with a view on investment and financial flows for addressing climate change for the key sectors.
