On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP), the National Network for Poverty Alleviation, founded in the year 2000 with the support of the Poverty Strategy Initiative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in cooperation with the Families Development Association headed by Miyasser Al Saadi, will organize a one-day workshop on Wednesday 13 October.

Under the patronage of H.E. Government Spokesperson and Minister of State, Ms. Asma Khader and in cooperation with UNDP, the three-session workshop will cover 3 of the 8 ambitious Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): the sustainable environment goal, the maternal health goal and the gender equality and women empowerment goal in connection with the eradication of poverty.

H.E. Asma Khader, who received the UNDP Poverty Eradication Award 2003 for her efforts to advance the Millennium Development Goals and the founder of the National Network for Poverty Alleviation, will deliver the keynote address during the official opening of the workshop.  The opening will include speeches by Ms. Mona Hider, UNDP Resident Representative, ad interim, Mr. Ibrahim Hjouj of the Ministry of Planning & International Cooperation and Miyasser Al Saadi, Head of the Families Development Association and IDEP 1998 awardee. A presentation will also be given on the progress under the Jordan Poverty Alleviation Strategy.

Each year since 1993, all countries around the world commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on 17 October.  Events are organised around this day with the intention of calling the attention of policy makers, implementers, donors and the whole population including the poor and the non-poor, to the issue of poverty and to the need to address poverty as a matter of urgency.

This year’s IDEP worldwide theme is “Youth- A new voice for the Millennium Development Goals”, which presents a great challenge to the young community whose leadership qualities and determination would make a difference towards achieving the MDGs by 2015.
