Thursday, 4 December 2008 – Deputized by H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Suhair Al Ali patronized the first anniversary of the launch of the UN Global Compact (GC) in Jordan.
Organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the event was attended by more than 200 representatives from the private sector, government, civil society, United Nations and international missions and media.
The UN Global Compact is a multistakeholder inititave which seeks to promote responsible corporate citizenship so that business can be part of the solution to the challenges of globalization.Through a wide range of specialised work-streams, management tools, resources, and topical programs, the GC aims to make the ten GC principles part of business strategy, operations and culture and facilitate partnerships in support of broader UN development goals. The GC is therefore a great foundation for effective partnerships and business-to-business collaboration.
Under the theme “The UN Global Compact in Jordan Grew 1 Year” the event celebrated the success and the expansion of the UN Global Compact Local Network (GCLN) in Jordan. In addition to the Greater Amman Municipality and the City of Salt, 22 leading Jordanian businesses are now members of the GCLN, thus agreeing to design their strategies and activities under norms of respect and promotion of the GC’s 10 principles which cover four thematic areas: human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and anti-corruption.
This success was the result of consolidating a strong relationship with a few major private sector entities in Jordan who have actively been supporting the expansion of GCLN by championing the GC among partners and stakeholders in order to promote the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principles within business activities. In addition, they have fully sponsored the event of today.
The GC is both a solid policy platform and a practical framework which allows companies to develop innovative solutions and achieve long-term business success while fulfilling society’s expectation that corporations operate responsibly.
The event included statements by Luc Stevens, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Jordan, Suhair Al-Ali, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Omar Al Maani the Mayor of Amman and Mr. Suleiman Matouk, Managing Director of IDEA/JWT and National Coordinator of the GC local network.
