The 1st Anniversary of the Launch of the UN Global Compact in Jordan

03 December 2008

Wednesday, 3 December 2008 - Under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will be hosting today an event to celebrate the First Anniversary of the Launch of the UN Global Compact (GC) in Jordan.   The UN Global Compact local network (GCLN) was first launched in Jordan in October 2007 in response to the country’s growing interest to promote greater involvement of the private sector in development and raise awareness of the role of corporate social responsibility in business activities.    UNDP in cooperation with the Government of Jordan has continued to expand the GCLN throughout 2008 by building partnerships with the private sector, civil society and NGO’s in order to provide collaborative solutions to the most fundamental challenges facing both business and society. Today 24 Jordanian businesses operating in different sectors are committed to align their operations and strategies with the ten universally accepted Global Compact principles in the areas of human rights, labor rights, environmental protection and anti-corruption.   The event, which will take place this evening, is an opportunity to celebrate achievements and promote the UN Global Compact Local Network (GCLN) to a larger number of businesses in the country.   The event will include statements by Luc Stevens, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Jordan, Suhair Al-Ali, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Omar Al Maani the Mayor of Amman and Mr. Suleiman Matouk, Managing Director of IDEA/JWT and National Coordinator of the GC local network.
