Jordan Living Standard Index- 1st Capacity Building Workshop

December 12, 2009 –The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MOPIC) and the Department of Statistics (DOS) in Cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched a ten-day workshop entitled “Jordan Living Standard Index- 1st Capacity Building Workshop” on 12 -22 December 2009 within the framework of the UNDP project “Support to Poverty Analysis and Monitoring at the Department of Statistics and the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation”. The project is being implemented in cooperation with ESCWA.The event is part of a series of capacity building workshops organized for measuring living standards in Jordan. The workshops are planned in the period from December 2009 until April 2010. The main objective is building the capacity of a national team – representing the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, the Department of Statistics, the Ministry of Social Development, the Social Solidarity Coordination Commission and the National Aid Fund – in using household data to construct a multidimensional measure of poverty and living standards in general. The workshops are also expected to enhance the national team skills and experience with respect to understanding and processing raw data, presenting and discussing of findings, using relevant softwares and acquiring teamwork skills. The expected output is constructing a living standard index (LSI) that would be presented and discussed in an expert group meeting. Main speakers of the opening session were H.E. Dr. Haidar Fraihat, the Director General, Department of Statistics; H.E. Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh, the Secretary General, Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation; and Ms. Jacinta Barrins, Country Director, United Nations Development Programme.
