A three days regional training workshop on “ Climate Change Training for Arab States” was organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and United Nations Development Programme / Regional Bureau for Arab States (UNDP/RBAS) in coordination with the UNDP Jordan Country Office, was concluded on Wednesday 29th September, 2010. Aimed at supporting the negotiation process of the delegations to the Cancun Summit on Climate Change.
The workshop was attended by representatives from fourteen Arab countries and international experts, as well as, participants from the Government of Jordan -including Ministries of Environment, Planning & International Cooperation, and Water and Irrigation.
The following five topics were covered and discussed during the workshop (1) the science of climate change; (2) the United Nations Framwork Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiation process and the legal aspects of the process; (3) adaptation to climate change; (4) mainstreaming climate change into country policies, strategies, and development plans, (5) climate change mitigation.
During the wrap-up session the participants concluded that there is a need to continue to address the following: 1) develop new financing mechanisms to address the climate change adaptation aspects, 2) mainstream climate change adaptation and mitigation into countries national policies and strategies, 3) develop extensive and varied training programmes to strengthen the capacities of the Arab region to be able to propose and implement adaptation and mitigation measures for each of the countries, 4) develop extensive training programme on the UNFCCC negotiation skills .
The Country Director of UNDP Jordan Ms. Jacinta Barrins emphasized the need for inter- ministerial dialogue and consensus on how to mainstream climate change into each sector within countries. She also stressed the importance of effective inter- ministerial organizations mechanisms, at all levels, to ensure effective implementation and leadership on this topic .UNDP is pleased to offer support to Jordan in this regard..
