The first in the Arab region at a governorate’s level, the release of the Millennium Development Goals Report for Aqaba next Sunday

Amman, 7 May 2008 – Within the framework of the project “Preparation of a Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Report for the Governorate of Aqaba in Support of the Formulation of a Sustainable Human Development Strategy and Implementation Plan”, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority will launch the Millennium Development Goals Report for Aqaba next Sunday, 11 May.
Since Jordan issued its MDG Report at the country level in the year 2004, it was apparent that there was an essential need to localize sustainable development efforts and ensure that local communities are adequately informed and equipped to work toward meeting the Millennium Development Goals by the year 2015.
The MDG Report for Aqaba is the first of its kind to track the MDGs at the Governorate level, not only in Jordan, but also in the entire Arab region. It is the result of the active participation of the specialized governmental institutions, the different NGOs in the Aqaba governorate and ASEZA, in cooperation with UNDP Jordan and UNDP’s Capacity 2015 Regional Programme for Arab States.
The MDGs represent a global partnership that has grown from the commitments and targets established at the world summits of the 1990s. Responding to the world`s main development challenges and to the calls of civil society, the MDGs promote poverty reduction, education, maternal health, gender equality, and aim at combating child mortality, AIDS and other diseases.
Set for the year 2015, the MDGs are an agreed set of goals that can be achieved if all actors work together and do their part.
