Objectives

 

    • Modify building code to integrate DRR concerns, train local engineers to conduct structural assessments and retrofit design, produce retrofit design reports of critical infrastructure, and integrate DRR in academic curriculum of bachelor degrees at selected universities in Jordan.

    • Focal Point formalized; 4 JNBC core team members selected; financial modality agreed upon; office set up and equipped at JNBC (for PMA + PA).

       
    • Main stakeholders identified and invited to sit on the PAC. TOR drafted for the PAC, many PAC meetings held and PAC recommendations provided for way forward. Attendance by 23 stakeholders, including Minister and SG of MoPW, and main project donor (SDC).
       
    • ToR for international experts to conduct training of retrofit design teams of Jordanian engineers announced after PAC consultation. International experts selected and approval of selection of the Italian firm EQCO by UNDP Regional CAP. EQCO contracted and kick off meeting conducted. 1st full EQCO mission in October, training to be conducted in February-March and retrofit design of selected critical infrastructure in 2013.

       
    • PAC recommendation to procure local consultants to support international experts in contextualizing the retrofit design training, TOR for these local consultants developed and discussed at 2nd PAC meeting, RFP announced, and 2 qualified proposals received. Royal Scientific Society was selected as the Local Entity for supporting the international consultant.
       
    • Initial discussion with management at Royal Scientific Society (sole mandated institution) regarding the review and update of the Jordan Building Code to incorporate DRR. RSS presentation – at 2nd PAC meeting – of methodology and work plan for update of the building code. Now the project in the process of contracting RSS for this regard.
