Background


The project aims to increase the role of the private sector and civil society organizations in collectively addressing issues related to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).  It would enable the private sector in Jordan to benefit from an international framework such as the Global Compact (GC) which would ensure responsible business practices through the integration of the ten GC principles into companies’ strategies and operations. Objectives

 

  • In response to a national priority to focus on CSR, and in line with recommendations from the UN CCA –private sector development, capacity building with regards to human and labour rights issues, environmental management and anti-corruption policies - the project aims to increase the role of the private sector and civil society organizations in collectively addressing these issues. Specifically, the private sector in Jordan could benefit from an international framework such as the Global Compact which would ensure responsible business practices through the integration of the ten principles into companies’ strategies and operations and to promote greater involvement of business in development. This would promote the development of a business community that respects universal values, improve companies business processes and may, in turn, enhance their reputation as well as build their competitive edge in the international arena.

  • UNDP conducted several meetings with the Steering Committee.
     
  • UNDP Conducted several meetings with the private sector companies to define their needs.

     
  • Awareness Seminars were conducted to the private sector companies according to their needs:
    a. Awareness Seminar conducted on December 2011, by Mr. Walid Naji, from GC Office in New York. The seminar mainly talked about Global Compact principles, how to join, after the signature and reporting.
    b. Seminar on Labor Standards as one of Global Compact principle was conducted in cooperation with American University in Cairo, Gerhart Center. The Seminar mainly talked about Social Responsibility, labor difficulties and Challenges in Jordan.

     
  • Knowledge Sharing Systems was updated regularly with all the information, pictures, press releases and everything regarding the meetings and seminars
     
  • There are 34 participants in Global Compact Local Network in Jordan. For the list of participants please click here

  • A meeting with the Global Compact members was set to discuss the sustainability of the local network, since the project will close at UNDP. Many companies showed interest to host the GC local Network but finally Aramex will host the local network for the upcoming two years.
  • One day training on Corporate Social Responsibility was conducting in cooperation with Gerhart Center at the American University in Cairo for the members of the local network.
